Denny's Paint Job - Appetizing  Question  Help TasteBud

Denny's at the 5 and Carlsbad Village Drive just got a new paint job. All earth tones. Didn't those colors go out with the '70's. Not very appetizing to me.

What do you think?

Hodad's Coming to Village Faire? How are their burgers?  Question  Help yumyum

Hodad's is opening soon in the Carlsbad Village Faire center.

The company's web site indicates there is an existing restaurant in Ocean Beach. The menu is burgers and fries.

Has anybody eaten at Hodad's? Will their burgers win the local cholesterol-gobbling crowd?

From the north and east, the Fellowship's quite impressive building makes an impressive view set atop the hills off Mission Avenue. Up close, its even more dramatic. Picture

Is it possible to ship my dog?  Question  Help elise

Southwest Airlines doesn't accommodate pets.

American Airlines doesn't allow pets to be travel by plane when temperatures are too high.

Other airlines may have similar concerns. I've read where smaller pets can sometimes go under a seat. Even when checking is permitted, I am not very happy with checking a dog into the cargo bin.

Are there shipping options?

Monster Burrito at Los Tacos

By the same company that operates Senor Grubby's on Carlsbad Village Dr in the Village, Los Tacos is location in the Pacific Coast Center (OK, Walmart center) off Jefferson and the 78. It's in the same strip as Starbuck's, Einstein Bakery and others on the left just after you've entered the center by car.

The special item "California Burrito" is one BIG burrito. I think it's the largest I've ever seen. There's a lot of dough but it holds a lot of stuff as well including, believe it or not, French Fries. Only $5.15.

Ingredients are promoted as fresh and other items look good too.

See the Los Tacos web site for the menu, etc.

Pacific Market Indian Food - Other Indian food?  Question  Help TasteBud

Having seen the sign outside Pacific Market on Tremont off Wisconsin, I ventured in to try some Indian food. The market offers some grocery products and Mexican as well as Indian food.

The proprietor bounced around between running the cash register and doing the cooking.

One item on the menu was Vegetable Curry, described as having cauliflower and potatoes, eggplant and potatoes, "a combination of all four,"except as I found out after ordering, "no vegetables today." Like it seems as always been the case with these small Indian restaurants, they are out of what you order if you choose from the menu. It's best to ask what they DO have. I had Chicken Masala. It included a lot of brown rice and good-tasting chicken.

Is there any other place I can get Indian food in Carlsbad or a neighboring community?

Today's Local News - RIP

Serving the area since 2004, Today's Local News announced that Sunday's issue was its last.

With the newspaper industry slumping along with the economy and new owners at the Union Tribune, this development could be anticipated, but some of us will miss the local coverage.

Dr. James Davies - Local cataract specialist

Dr. James Davies, MD a Carlsbad ophthalmologist , has his own surgical center on Laguna St just north of the village. A friend of mine investigated several alternative cataract surgeons before choosing Dr. Davies. The surgery was successful and my friend was very pleased with both the results and the quality of information received in the process of investigating options.

An article about Dr. Davies appears in Today's Local News on April 10, 2008. The article indicated that Dr. Davies was an early user of Cyrstalens, an lens product used in cataract surgery with the unique benefit of giving the patient automatic focus over a wide range instead of just distance. Typical products require the patient to wear glasses for close vision.

Dr. Davies donated his services to provide Crystalens to a person unable to afford the product. The lens was donated by Bausch and Lomb, manufacturer of Crystalens.

George Bradford - Optometrist

I've heard good things about George Bradford, an optometrist with Visionworks Optometrix. It's located on the lower level of the Westfield Camino Plaza mall close to the main Macy's store on the north side.

Built it and they will come - Doctors?

Either people of done some research and figured out that many medical professionals are anxious to move to the village or some recent investments are in big trouble.

The two year old medical building on the west side of Jefferson just north of Grand seems almost entirely empty.

The new medical village condos on Carlsbad Village Drive east of I-5 have a lot of capacity in search of buyers, occupants.

Is it realistic to expect many new medical practices in the village area? How will this space get filled?
