Interesting people

Who are the interesting people of Carlsbad?

Rooster Man

I first saw the gentleman in the early 90's. He push a shopping cart along Carlsbad Village Drive. I recall seeing the cart in front of Jack-in-the-Box. A rooster was sitting in the cart.

Over the years, I saw Rooster Man a number of times.

During the Christmas season of 1997, I was out for a walk and saw the gentleman all dressed up as Santa. He no longer had the rooster in the cart. I asked if he'd allow me to take his picture and he agreed. Once I had gotten a picture, he pulled out a Polaroid camera and asked if he could take my picture. I agreed.

Sadly, it's now been years since I have seen this icon of Carlsbad Village.

Demise of Mr.Rodriguez

A local merchant tells me that Rooster Man, Mr. Rodriquez, passed away.

"Unibomber"

Walking the village you may have noticed a street person making his home on a park bench. I've heard him referred to as the "Unibomber" for his somewhat scary looking appearance. But he may be quite a harmless fellow.

Bill Ostrie

Bill Ostrie and his wife Evo own the Carlsbad Village Art and Antique Mall on State Street. Bill is also president of the Carlsbad Village Business Association.

Bill and his wife have pledged an inital $10,000 to launch an outdoor art initiative. The CVBA intends to raise another $200,000 and seek $400,000 from the City of Carlsbad in order to bring outdoor art to the village. This art would take the form of street viewable sculptures and murals.

The motivation for this initiative is to enhance the village area and atract more visitors, including tourists who may not now see the village as a location to visit when they are in town visiting Legoland, Aviara, La Costa and other popular attractions.

Lauren Cooper

Broken down with my bike, Lauren Cooper arrived to provide road service.

Lauren rides an orange recumbent Cyclops trike model and was going the other way on the coast highway when she saw me walking my own trike back home after a failed attempt to inflate a new tube failed.

With Lauren's pump we were able to get my tube inflated and put me back on the road.

Lauren's the founder of the National Equal Rights for Cyclist Campaign ("NERCC"). She promotes Advanced Traffic Bicycling and carries, as she rides, brochures promoting it. You can read more at CycleMedia.org

With a Google search for Lauren Cooper, you'll see that Lauren Cooper is quite well known for her efforts. She was charged with impeding traffic following an incident in which a motorist passed her on a blind curve while she was trying to deter his passing by holding out her left hand. Link to Article.

Joining Ms. Cooper in promoting Vehicular Cycling is the retired former Charlottesville, VA Police Chief J.W. Rittenhouse.

Ms. Cooper now resides in Carlsbad. I am thankful not only for her special efforts to get me back on the road again but her ongoing effort to promote safety.
